FAQs

Cheesecloth Frequently Asked Questions

What is cheesecloth made of?

Cheesecloth is made from 100% cotton fibers that are woven together to create a lightweight, porous fabric. The cotton fibers are usually untreated and unbleached, which means that the cheesecloth may have a natural, off-white color.

What are cheesecloth grades?

The grades of the cheesecloth are represented by the number of threads per inch in each direction. Grade 10 cheesecloth is the lowest grade and the most open weave. Grades 40, 50 and 60 are medium weave, Grade 80 is a fine weave and Grade 90 is usually noted as extra fine weave. Grades 80 and 90 are the most durable of the cheesecloth fabrics and are washable and reusable. Choosing which grade of cheesecloth to use is dependent on the application.

Is cheesecloth reusable?

If the cheesecloth is used to strain liquids or to wrap herbs, usually it can be rinsed in cold water, wrung out, and hung up to dry. Once dried, it can be reused for a similar application.

If the cheesecloth is used to strain greasy or oily substances or for something that had strong flavors or odors, it is best to discard it and use new.

It’s important to note that cheesecloth can become fragile after repeated use and washing and will lose its durability. To extend its life, it’s recommended to wash it by hand in cold water.

Is cheesecloth safe to use with food?

The bleached cheesecloth supplied by Cheesecloth Outlet is considered food grade safe and has been processed to remove all the impurities of the natural cotton fibres such as seed particles and oils. Peroxide is used to clean and whiten the cheesecloth; it is a non-chlorine bleach that does not contain any chemical binders.
